Vitality T20 Blast 2024 Team Previews
The 18 teams shall play in the North and South Groups like in previous years. Let's look at the teams and how they have fared in the tournament.
North Group
Birmingham Bears
It was a repeat of 2022 for the Bears. They have finished at the top of the points table for two consecutive seasons but failed to win in the knockout. They lost to the Essex Eagles in the Quarterfinal. They won the title in 2014 and have been one of the most consistent teams, reaching the knockout stage 13 times. The side will have its eyes on the title and have a very strong team that will trouble the opponents.
Birmingham Bears Squad: Alex Davies (c & wk), Amir Khan, Hamza Shaikh, Jacob Bethell, Robert Yates, Sam Hain, Aamer Jamal, Chris Woakes, Dan Mousley, Ed Barnard, George Garton, Michael Booth, Moeen Ali, Will Rhodes, Chris Benjamin (wk), Michael Burgess (wk), Che Simmons, Chris Rushworth, Craig Miles, Danny Briggs, Hasan Ali, Jake Lintott, Liam Norwell, Michael Rae, Oliver Hannon-Dalby, Richard Gleeson
Lancashire Lightning
Lancashire Lightning
Since their title win in 2015, the side hasn't kissed the trophy. However, they are the most consistent side in the tournament's history and have made it to the knockout in 16 seasons. The side finished second on the points table during the group stage but lost in the Quarterfinal. They have a star-studded squad and have the right balance between their batting and bowling. While they will miss some of their best players at the start of the tournament, they will be one of the favorites this year for the title.
Lancashire Lightning Squad: Keaton Jennings (c), George Bell, Harry Singh, Josh Bohannon, Tom Bruce, George Balderson, Joshua Boyden, Liam Livingstone, Luke Wells, Steven Croft, Tom Aspinwall, George Lavelle (wk), Jos Buttler (wk), Matthew Hurst (wk), Phil Salt (wk), Chris Green, Jack Blatherwick, Jack Morley, James Anderson, Luke Wood, Mitchell Stanley, Nathan Lyon, Saqib Mahmood, Tom Bailey, Tom Hartley, Will Williams
Worcestershire Rapids
The Rapids put up a good show last season, finishing third on the points table. But they had a poor outing against the Hampshire Hawks in the Quarterfinal. It was a strong comeback after finishing at the bottom of the points table in 2022. They won the title in 2018 and will take inspiration from that win. The players in the team bonded well last year, and they will be one of the dark horses this year, even though they don't have the kind of firepower some of their opponents have.
Worcestershire Rapids Squad: Brett D'Oliveira (c), Adam Hose, Ed Pollock, Jake Libby, Olly Cox, Rehaan Edavalath, Rob Jones, Ethan Brookes, Jason Holder, Josh Cobb, Kashif Ali, Matthew Waite, Tom Taylor, Gareth Roderick (wk), Henry Cullen (wk), Adam Finch, Ben Gibbon, Harry Darley, Joe Leach, Josh Baker, Nathan Smith, Usama Mir, Yadvinder Singh
Notts Outlaws
They won the title in 2017 and 2019, but the last two few seasons haven't been great for the side. They finished 4th on the points table last year but lost in the Quarterfinal against Somerset. The side failed to show consistency, which has hurt the team for a while. They have a new captain for the season and a strong group of young players. With their third title in mind, they shall aim for a better finish this year and expect to start their first few games and build momentum.
Notts Outlaws Squad: Joe Clarke (c & wk), Haseeb Hameed, Alex Hales, Ben Slater, Benjamin Martindale, Dane Schadendorf, Freddie McCann, Jack Haynes, Sam King, Will Young, Calvin Harrison, Fateh Singh, Liam Patterson-White, Lyndon James, Matthew Montgomery, Steven Mullaney, Ben Duckett (wk), Tom Moores (wk), Benjamin Lister, Brett Hutton, Dane Paterson, Dillon Pennington, Fazalhaq Farooqi, James Hayes, Josh Tongue, Luke Fletcher, Matthew Carter, Olly Stone, Toby Pettman, Tom Loten
Yorkshire Vikings
The side has struggled to crack the code in this format. They finished 5th on the points table last season and didn't qualify for the knockout stage. They started the season last year with three consecutive losses and never recovered. They have been in the semifinals once but have yet to have their hands on the title. It's a new season, and they want to start fresh, aim for a good start, and take things as they come. There are good players on the side, and they can surprise the opponents if they can show consistency.
Yorkshire Vikings Squad: Shan Masood (c), Adam Lyth, Dawid Malan, Harry Brook, James Wharton, Joe Root, William Luxton, Yash Vagadia, Dom Bess, Donovan Ferreira (wk), George Hill, Jordan Thompson, Matthew Revis, Finlay Bean (wk), Harry Duke (wk), Jonathan Tattersall (wk), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Adil Rashid, Ben Coad, Benjamin Cliff, Daniel Moriarty, Dominic Leech, Jaffer Chohan, Matt Milnes, Matthew Fisher, Mickey Edwards, Vishwa Fernando
Derbyshire Falcons
The Falcons finished third in the group stage and lost in the Quarterfinal last year. They haven't won the title yet, with the 2019 Semifinal being their best finish. It will be interesting to see if the side can grab its maiden title this year. The side had shown some sparks last year, and they have a good team for the season.
Derbyshire Falcons Squad: Samit Patel (c), Ben Aitchison, Haider Ali, Harry Came, Zak Chappell, Sam Conners, Anuj Dal, Billy Godleman, Brooke Guest, Archie Harrison, Zaman Khan, Suranga Lakmal, Matt Lamb, Wayne Madsen, Mattie McKiernan, Nick Potts, Luis Reece, George Scrimshaw, Alex Thomson, Mitch Wagstaff, Mark Watt, Tom Wood, Leus du Plooy
Leicestershire Foxes
Title winners in 2004, 2006, and 2011, the side hasn't repeated its success in the last few seasons. They didn't qualify for the knockouts in the last two seasons and shall be looking to put these upsets behind them.
Leicestershire Foxes Squad: Ben Cox (c), Rehan Ahmed, Ed Barnes, Sol Budinger, Will Davis, Sam Evans, Michael Finan, Lewis Hill, Josh Hull, Louis Kimber, Aaron Lilley, Wiaan Mulder, Naveen-ul-Haq, Callum Parkinson, Rishi Patel, Matt Salisbury, Tom Scriven, Scott Steel, Harry Swindells, Nick Welch, Chris Wright, Roman Walker
Northamptonshire Steelbacks
Two-time winners in 2013 and 2016, the side has seen a slump in its fortune since then. They finished in 7th place last season after a disappointing run where most of their key players looked rusty. They will hope for better fortunes this year and will be ready to prove themselves on the field.
Northamptonshire Steelbacks Squad: David Willey (c), Gareth Berg, Josh Cobb, Emilio Gay, Harry Gouldstone, George Gowler, Freddie Heldreich, Rob Keogh, Simon Kerrigan, Chris Lynn, Lewis McManus, Gus Miller, Luke Procter, Alex Russell, Ollie Sale, James Sales, Ben Sanderson, Tom Taylor, Andrew Tye, Ricardo Vasconcelos, George Weldon, Graeme White, Jack White, Saif Zaib
Durham Cricket
They have been the perennial bottom hunters of the points table in the North Group. They won just three games last year, finishing 8th in the group. The team is known for its poor starts, and they will like to get over this infamous record here. They have talented players in the team who would look to prove themselves on the big stage.
Durham Cricket Squad: Alex Lees (c), David Bedingham (South Africa), Scott Borthwick, Jonathan Bushnell, Brydon Carse, Graham Clark, Paul Coughlin, Harry Crawshaw, Luke Doneathy, George Drissell, Oliver Gibson, Brandon Glover, Michael Jones, Bas de Leede, Tom Mackintosh, Matthew Potts, Ben Raine, Ollie Robinson, Nathan Sowter, Ben Stokes, Tristan Stubbs (South Africa), Liam Trevaskis, Ross Whitfield, Mark Wood
South Group
Somerset
The defending champions would look to continue from where they left last season. It was an excellent show from the team where they dominated from the start, losing only two league games and riding the momentum in the knockout stage. The side has shown consistency in the last three seasons, where they have been among the Top 4. The team has some of the best local players in the squad, who have played together for many years and have signed in good overseas players. They will be a side to watch out for this season.
Somerset Squad: Lewis Gregory (c), Andrew Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, Matt Renshaw, Sean Dickson, Tom Abell, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Tom Lammonby, Will Smeed, Craig Overton, George Thomas, Kasey Aldridge, Roelof van der Merwe, James Rew (wk), Tom Banton (wk), Alfie Ogborne, Jack Leach, Jake Ball, Josh Davey, Migael Pretorius, Ned Leonard, Shoaib Bashir, Sonny Baker
Hampshire Hawks
The Hampshire Hawks failed short of back-to-back titles after losing in the semifinal against the Essex Eagles. They didn't show the consistency they would have expected last year but finished second on the points table after the league stage. They have won the title thrice – 2010, 2012, and 2022, making them the most successful side with the Leicestershire Foxes. They have a strong batting lineup and depth in the bowling attack, and they will be one of the sides to watch out for this year.
Hampshire Hawks Squad: James Vince (c), Ali Orr, Felix Organ, Fletcha Middleton, Joe Weatherley, Nick Gubbins, Toby Albert, Benny Howell, James Fuller, Keith Barker, Liam Dawson, Michael Neser, Tom Prest, Ben Brown (wk), Ben McDermott (wk), Joseph Eckland (wk), Brad Wheal, Chris Wood, John Turner, Kyle Abbott, Mohammad Abbas, Naveen-ul-Haq
Surrey
They won the inaugural Blast title in 2003 but have never added another trophy to their cabinet since then. They have been consistent in the last few seasons, making it to the knockout stages, but have succumbed under pressure. They did well last year and made it to the semifinal, where they lost to Somerset. They have one of the strongest outfits and some of the best overseas T20 players on paper. Bookmakers have them as one of the pre-tournament favorites, and rightly so, based on the team's strength. They have the resources to go to the final and will be one of the teams closely watched.
Surrey Squad: Ollie Pope (c), Ben Geddes, Cameron Steel, Dan Lawrence, Dominic Sibley, Jason Roy, Laurie Evans, Ryan Patel, Chris Jordan, Jamie Overton, Jordan Clark, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Will Jacks, Ben Foakes (wk), Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Blake (wk), Amar Virdi, Conor McKerr, Daniel Worrall, Gus Atkinson, James Taylor, Kemar Roach, Matt Dunn, Nathan Barnwell, Reece Topley, Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson, Thomas Lawes, Tom Ealham, Yousef Majid
Essex Eagles
They lost to Somerset in the final last season, which will still hurt the players and fans as they lost from a position of strength. However, the players will look to take inspiration from the spirited performance they put up in the final phase last year. They have won the title once in 2019 and will aim for their second title. They have been a consistent team and qualified for the knockouts regularly. They have the right group of players to go the distance with a strong bowling attack, giving them an edge. With the players knowing each other's game well, the Eagles will be one of the sides to watch out for.
Essex Eagles Squad: Simon Harmer (c), Dean Elgar, Feroze Khushi, Nick Browne, Robin Das, Tom Westley, Luc Benkenstein, Matt Critchley, Noah Thain, Paul Walter, Adam Rossington (wk), Jordan Cox (wk), Michael Pepper (wk), Aaron Beard, Ben Allison, Daniel Sams, Jamal Richards, Jamie Porter, Sam Cook, Shane Snater
Kent Spitfires
They won the title in 2007 and 2021 but haven’t been in the best shape in the last two seasons. They started poorly last year winning once in their first six games and failed to recover. The side finished fifth on the points table and failed to reach the knockout stage. The side has some of the best T20 players in this tournament and has the resources to claim their third title this year. They would look for a positive start under a new captain this year and aim to make it to the knockouts.
Kent Spitfires Squad: Sam Billings (c & wk), Zak Crawley, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Tawanda Muyeye, Joe Denly, Marcus ORiordan, Joey Evison, Grant Stewart, Beyers Swanepoel, Xavier Bartlett, Matthew Parkinson, Matthew Quinn, Harry Finch, Jack Leaning, Wes Agar, Charles Stobo, Fred Klaassen, Hamidullah Qadri, Michael Cohen, George Garrett, Ben Compton, Nathan Gilchrist, Jaskaran Singh, Arafat Bhuiyan, Jaydn Denly
Sussex Sharks
The Sharks didn't have a great season last year, finishing 6th on the points table. It has been a decade and a half of drought for the team that won its only title back in 2009. They have several big names in the squad and look to make it count this year. The batting lineup is strong for the team, with several power hitters in the squad. Their bowlers let the side down last year, and they would look to avoid the same mistake. The side has a new captain this season, and players have been in good form in recent games. They will be a dark horse this year.
Sussex Sharks Squad: Tymal Mills (c ), Danial Ibrahim, Daniel Hughes, Harrison Ward, Tom Clark, Tom Haines, Zach Lion-Cachet, Bertie Foreman, Danny Lamb, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Henry Rogers, James Coles, Charlie Tear (wk), Oliver Carter (wk), Tom Alsop (wk), Archie Lenham, Aristides Karvelas, Bradley Currie, Henry Crocombe, Jack Carson, Jayden Seales, Jaydev Unadkat, Jofra Archer, Nathan McAndrew, Ollie Robinson, Sean Hunt,
Gloucestershire
They finished 7th on the points table last year in the group stage and have been among the bottom hunters of the points table. The side had made it to the semifinal in 2003, but since then, they haven't gone beyond the league stage in most seasons. The side has strengthened its batting lineup this season and has some of the best players in the format. Gloucestershire will aim to make amends this season and make it to the knockouts. Senior players must deliver the goods for the side to do well and finish among the Top 4 in their group.
Gloucestershire Squad: Jack Taylor (c), Cameron Bancroft, Chris Dent, Graeme van Buuren, Joe Phillips, Miles Hammond, Tom Price, Tommy Boorman, Ahmed Syed, Beau Webster, Ben Charlesworth, Ed Middleton, Luke Charlesworth, Oliver Price, Zaman Akhter, Ben Wells (wk), James Bracey (wk), Ajeet Dale, Archie Bailey, David Payne, Dominic Goodman, Josh Shaw, Marchant de Lange, Matt Taylor, Tom Smith, Zafar Gohar
Glamorgan
With five wins in 14 games, Glamorgan will look to get past the poor show from last season. They are one of the weakest teams in the groups, and two semifinal finishes are all that this Welsh side can claim. They haven't posed a serious challenge to their opponents in the past few seasons and have suffered due to their inconsistency. The side hasn’t made it to the knockouts since 2017. The side with a lot of talent would like to get the monkey off its back and start well this season.
Glamorgan Squad: Kiran Carlson (c), Sam Northeast, Asa Tribe, Billy Root, Colin Ingram, Eddie Byrom, Kiran Carlson, Marnus Labuschagne, Thomas Bevan, Andy Gorvin, Ben Kellaway, Daniel Douthwaite, James Harris, Alex Horton (wk), Chris Cooke (wk), Henry Hurle (wk), William Smale (wk), Ben Morris, Harry Podmore, Jamie McIlroy, Mason Crane, Mir Hamza, Prem Sisodiya, Timm van der Gugten, Zain-ul-Hassan
Middlesex
They finished 9th and at the bottom of the points table last season with only three wins in 14 games. The side has been to the knockouts only once in the last six seasons. The side has been inconsistent since winning the title back in 2008. They have a strong batting lineup, but the weak bowling attack has let the side down. Poor start has been a problem for the team, and they lost the first ten games last year. Middlesex will look to start the season with a bang and get their campaign going.
Middlesex Squad: Stephen Eskinazi (c), Joshua De Caires, Leus du Plooy, Mark Stoneman, Max Holden, Sam Robson, Luke Hollman, Martin Andersson, Nathan Fernandes, Ryan Higgins, Jack Davies (wk), Joe Cracknell (wk), Robbie White (wk), (wk), Blake Cullen, Ethan Bamber, Henry Brookes, Ishaan Kaushal, Noah Cornwell, Thilan Walallawita, Tom Helm
